The Silent Strategy: How Iran Is Preparing to Face the United States
It is not an equal fight by any means. On one end, we have the United States, the military giant of the world, with the best technology, money, and resources. On the other end, we have Iran, a regional power that recognizes it cannot win this fight by playing by the same rules. So rather than trying to fight strength for strength, Iran is trying to change the rules by which the fight is waged.
The plan by Iran is based on one very simple concept: don’t fight where the enemy is strongest. Rather than trying to fight the U.S. military head-on in a conventional battle, Iran is trying to wage a battle that is disorganized, unpredictable, and hard to contain. A battle that is not meant to be won, but one that is meant to be too costly to continue.
One of the biggest strengths that Iran has going for it is where it is located on the world map. It is located right next to one of the most important oil routes in the world. Instead of utilizing this as a tool for the economy, Iran uses it as a pressure point. Instead of making the United States fight a war on two fronts, it makes the world economy feel the pressure of a war that it started by making tensions run high on that particular route. In a war like this, the war isn’t just fought on land or at sea; it’s also fought in the economy.
Iran’s preparation for war goes a little further than just the geography that it’s located in, however. Iran isn’t just relying on one powerful tool in the war that it’s going to fight against the United States. Instead, it’s utilizing different tools that it has at its disposal, such as missiles, drones, small naval vessels, and indirect attacks that aren’t meant to destroy, but to disrupt, to confound, and to make the enemy react instead of act.
Such a strategy has one and only one objective in mind: controlling the pace of the war. If the US is seeking an accelerated end to the war, Iran is preparing for it to be slow and exhausting. A war in which each step takes time, money, and attention. In time, even an enemy with greater resources can start to feel the pressure.
A further level of Iran’s preparations is psychological. In modern warfare, perception is just as important as capability. Iran is showing the world it is capable of reacting in multiple ways and in multiple places. Perception is key in modern warfare. Uncertainty is dangerous. Uncertainty makes one hesitate. Uncertainty can cause one to change one’s mind at the highest level.
What adds more complexity to this situation is that this war is not static. It is a war that goes beyond borders, beyond armies, and into global systems. Trade, energy, and even cyberspace can be part of this war. Thus, in a certain sense, Iran is not simply preparing for a war against the United States. It is preparing for a war against the United States in a multi-dimensional manner.
At the end of it all, it is not about winning against the United States in a traditional sense. It is about resisting it long enough, smartly enough, and strategically enough to change the equation. This is not a war of dominance. This is a war of endurance.
