Ukraine Backs Pope’s Call for Olympic Truce Amid Ongoing War

The idea of an “Olympic truce” dates back to ancient times, when warring states would pause fighting so athletes could safely travel to and from the Games. This year, with the Winter Olympics happening in Italy from 6 to 22 February 2026, Pope Leo urged world leaders and both sides in the conflict to honor that tradition and work toward peace during the sporting event.

The Ukrainian government responded positively to the Pope’s call, saying it supports any effort that reduces violence and protects civilian lives. Ukraine has continued to face heavy attacks from Russian forces since the invasion began in February 2022, and many citizens and leaders hope that even a short break in fighting could help build trust for wider peace talks.

International leaders are now watching closely to see how Russia responds to the appeal for a ceasefire. While Ukraine and its allies back the idea, there is uncertainty whether Russia will agree to pause military actions, underscoring the ongoing challenge of ending the conflict.

As the 2026 Winter Olympics continue in Italy, the world is watching not only the sports but also whether global diplomatic efforts like the Pope’s call for a truce can help reduce violence and push toward longer‑term peace.
