Rwanda Welcomes 164 Asylum Seekers Rescued from Libya as Migration Crisis Continues

The group, mostly families and individuals at risk, arrived in Kigali early today under a mission coordinated with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Authorities transferred them to the Gashora Transit Centre in Bugesera District, which serves as a temporary reception and protection facility.

Rwanda has become a key partner in humanitarian relocations, offering safe passage for refugees and asylum seekers who face violence, exploitation, or detention in transit countries like Libya. Officials say the government remains committed to supporting vulnerable populations through coordinated international efforts.

The announcement comes amid broader concerns over forced returns and protection gaps for refugees in the region. For example, Tanzanian authorities have faced criticism for plans to return Burundian refugees, prompting warnings from aid agencies about potential risks to their safety.

Today’s evacuation underscores the continuing migration and refugee challenges in Africa, with Rwanda playing a central role in offering protection and support as humanitarian needs grow across the continent.
